November 25th “Snowy”

November 26th, 2010 § 0

Been playing at making snowflakes for the last day or so, partly inspired by Marian Bantjes’ awesome talk the other night (and even more awesome snowflakes), and partly by the need for holiday promotions.
It’s one good way to make use of a lot of glyphs I’d otherwise never have a reason to pull out.

2010|365: A Design Project
In an effort to keep from getting creatively stagnant as I go through the course of a 9-5 design job, as well as staving off general laziness, I’ve undertaken this personal project.
Every day, rain, shine or somewhere inbetween, I will be making something cool. The results may be photos, design pieces, experimental type, videos, or anything else I feel is worth showing. The only caveat will be that each piece will have to be made that day, even though it might not get posted on the same day.
The end result of the project will be a book (possibly 365 pages long, maybe shorter to reduce costs), which I will make available to anyone who wants to pay for one.

November 24th “Savory Pacman”

November 26th, 2010 § 0

While other Pacmen may have a bit of a sweet tooth, preferring cherries and Corn Pops, Savory Pacman has a more refined taste.

Made some savory scones inspired by JJ Bean’s rather tasty ones.

2½ cups all-purpose flour
1 Tbs & 2 tsp Baking Powder
1 tsp salt
3 Tbs Salted Butter
100gm Old Orange Cheddar
3 scallions, green & white parts, chopped
1 Jalapeno, chopped fine
1 tsp Ground Black Pepper

½ Cup 2% Milk
½ Cup Buttermilk
1 egg

Egg wash:
Beat well with a fork:
1 egg & 2 Tbsp. milk

Heat oven to 400°.

Combine 2-1/2 cups flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.

Add cheeses & toss gently with a fork until combined.

Add scallions & toss gently with a fork until combined.

Beat milks with egg and gently fold into dry ingredients, mixing lightly until a soft dough forms. Add up to 1/2 cup additional flour if the dough is too sticky.

On a floured surface, gently pat the dough into a circle approximately 1-inch thick (or into two smaller circles for 12 scones). Handle the dough with a light touch and as little as possible.

With a sharp knife, cut the circle into 8 or 12 wedges and place them on a greased heavy duty baking sheet.

Brush tops and sides of scones with egg wash, and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack.

Eat.

A short film about garlic. Inspired by the massive pile of garlic paper I had after doing a full scale roasting session this evening.

November 22nd “Another Coal for the Fire”

Anyone who knows me knows I’m not one to complain about being cold. Today, however, the studio was chillier than a witch’s teet for most of the day. It inspired a number of Bob Cratchett/Ebneezer Scrooge jokes and prompted me to go get some fingerless working gloves. I figured I may as well complete the picture, and go back in time to the design studios of yore.

When designing bathroom icons, apparently one of the keys is to not make them too controversial. Boo.

November 18th “Stash: The Film”

November 22nd, 2010 § 0

With the generous donation of time from my employers at Metaform & Public, I got to turn my poster into a little Movember fundraiser movie for the Raincoast Stashmasters.
Intended for lovers of moustaches and typography, cause they go so darn well together.

So, the trend of me appearing in old masters artwork continues, it seems. While not quite as much of a likeness as the El Greco paintings, I think Mr Auguste Rodin, did a pretty decent job of it.
