December 2nd “Climbing the Ivory Tower”

I don’t know if the analogy really makes sense, but I just thought it would make a cool picture.

2010|365: A Design Project
In an effort to keep from getting creatively stagnant as I go through the course of a 9-5 design job, as well as staving off general laziness, I’ve undertaken this personal project.
Every day, rain, shine or somewhere inbetween, I will be making something cool. The results may be photos, design pieces, experimental type, videos, or anything else I feel is worth showing. The only caveat will be that each piece will have to be made that day, even though it might not get posted on the same day.
The end result of the project will be a book (possibly 365 pages long, maybe shorter to reduce costs), which I will make available to anyone who wants to pay for one.

You can track the project at the 2010|365 website or check out everything else I get up here.

December 1st “So Much Lego”

I had no idea that being a designer would involve so much playing with toys. Definitely not complaining though.

November 30th “Stash Fini”

The end result of a month of stash growing. I’m somewhat glad it’s over, but now my upper lip is finally realizing that it’s winter.

November 29th “Still Water”

December 2nd, 2010 § 0

Testing out some photo techniques, and seeing just how ghetto of a lighting setup I can make, and still produce something classy. In case you’re wondering, it’s drops of acrylic diluted in water falling into more water. Hence the little dot in mid-fall.

November 26th “French Bun”

Since I’ve been so into baked goods recently, I figured I’d feature this lovely french bun, and the lovely lady it’s attached to.

November 25th “Snowy”

November 26th, 2010 § 0

328|365

Been playing at making snowflakes for the last day or so, partly inspired by Marian Bantjes’ awesome talk the other night (and even more awesome snowflakes), and partly by the need for holiday promotions.
It’s one good way to make use of a lot of glyphs I’d otherwise never have a reason to pull out.

November 24th “Savory Pacman”

November 26th, 2010 § 0

327|365

While other Pacmen may have a bit of a sweet tooth, preferring cherries and Corn Pops, Savory Pacman has a more refined taste.

Made some savory scones inspired by JJ Bean’s rather tasty ones.

2½ cups all-purpose flour
1 Tbs & 2 tsp Baking Powder
1 tsp salt
3 Tbs Salted Butter
100gm Old Orange Cheddar
3 scallions, green & white parts, chopped
1 Jalapeno, chopped fine
1 tsp Ground Black Pepper

½ Cup 2% Milk
½ Cup Buttermilk
1 egg

Egg wash:
Beat well with a fork:
1 egg & 2 Tbsp. milk

Heat oven to 400°.

Combine 2-1/2 cups flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.

Add cheeses & toss gently with a fork until combined.

Add scallions & toss gently with a fork until combined.

Beat milks with egg and gently fold into dry ingredients, mixing lightly until a soft dough forms. Add up to 1/2 cup additional flour if the dough is too sticky.

On a floured surface, gently pat the dough into a circle approximately 1-inch thick (or into two smaller circles for 12 scones). Handle the dough with a light touch and as little as possible.

With a sharp knife, cut the circle into 8 or 12 wedges and place them on a greased heavy duty baking sheet.

Brush tops and sides of scones with egg wash, and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack.

Eat.

November 23rd “Garlic”

A short film about garlic. Inspired by the massive pile of garlic paper I had after doing a full scale roasting session this evening.
