The Last Chapter

work|spaces: exhibit teardown from Mark Stokoe on Vimeo.

The deconstruction of the work|spaces project exhibit at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design Undergraduate Exhibition in May 2009. The exhibit represented the summation of 4 months of work on my undergraduate thesis project.
The final project was a 136 page book examining a variety of individuals and how they interact with their working environments. For more information visit the project website at www.markstokoe.ca/spaces or email me at design@markstokoe.ca.

Production Update: Then things went to Hell.

Well, things have been rather busy, and progressing at a somewhat rapid pace towards the end of the project. Hence the lack of updates.

The plan to print on Epson Double Sided Presentation Matte (wonderful little inkjet) has died. After a collective 12 hours spent in the Digital Output Center at Emily Carr, numerous consultations with the rather knowledgeable Carlos and Eduardo, quite a lot of test prints, and a great amount of hair-pulling, the plan has died.

Due to a massive complication which has eluded my considerable skills in image pre-press, as well as Carlos’ savant-like ability with profiling, we were unable to get the color profile of the images and the profile of the indesign-generated content to work together. Could be in the print rip, could be in the pdf rip, could be a problematic color profile. Either way, the plan, ambitious to begin with (try printing a manually duplexed 140 page book when each page takes two minutes to print one side) is firmly buried.

That said, I shot off a few test spreads from the Image Press Laser, Productolith Dull 80-lb Cover stock, and it was satisfactory. Not quite the lucious and vibrant color of the inkjet, but passable, and pretty much essential given the timeframe I’m dealing with. However, I’m not quite satisfied (who ever is?) so I’m going to try and make arrangements to hit up a different printer in east van. The deadline for the pages is Monday, since they’ll be turned over to the more skilled hands of the folks at Centennial Bookbinding for case-binding, and possibly foil stamping.

Lastly, our final presentation is tomorrow. I’m armed with some test spreads, a hasty presentation of digital reader spreads, and weeks of poor sleep schedules. Frankly, I somehow doubt the audience tomorrow will be particularly critical, sadly. Passive is much more likely. *sigh*
